Sapphire Windows For the most demanding applications, sapphire is the obvious choice. This material is extremely hard and chemically inert, so it can be cleaned repeatedly with little danger of damage. Sapphire has excellent thermal properties and can withstand temperatures above 1500°C. Furthermore, sapphire transmits from the near UV to the mid IR. Too expensive? Sapphire windows cost only about 50% more than similar fused silica windows for diameters up to 20 mm.
